ALT: Alanine Aminotransferase

What is ALT?

The Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) blood test is done to check liver damage & diagnosis.
Alanine aminotransferase or ALT is an enzyme that helps the liver to convert food into energy.
High enzyme levels can signify that the liver is injured or irritated, and the enzymes are leaking out of the liver cells.

Normal SGPT levels – 7 to 56 units per liter of serum

ALT blood test also used to be called Serum Glutamic-Pyruvic Transaminase, or SGPT, this is sometimes called an SGPT test.
